Northern India captivates travellers with its rich history, architectural wonders, and immersive experiences woven through the legendary Golden Triangle route. More than most countries, the world’s most populous nation suggests a stream of vivid images longer than the River Ganges, from the serene Taj Mahal to bustling bazaars. The subcontinent can be more discombobulating than a rickshaw dodging a sacred cow, but it retains a strong hold on the curious traveller’s imagination – and we’re frequently asked about its many corners.
We’ve plotted a loop around the Golden Triangle – the bucket-list route from Delhi to Agra to Jaipur – that’ll take you from vibrant markets to shimmering palaces and Rajasthan’s pink and blue cities.
Delhi’s temples and markets

Start in capital Delhi with gold-domed Gurudwara Bangla Sahib, a Sikh temple where you’ll visit the community kitchen to learn about the religion’s central pillar of Sewa (selfless service). A chef-led walking tour of Delhi’s spice-laden markets stops for street food at several popular spots, accompanied by culinary explanations and chats with the stallholders.
‘We recommend The Imperial New Delhi, an oasis of tranquillity where you can unwind at the amazing pool, the spa, and with access to afternoon tea in the club,’ says Private Travel manager Susan Livsey. Thanks to our partnership, you’ll enjoy exclusive benefits including a room upgrade, complimentary daily breakfast, and credit to spend on food and drinks during your stay.
Sunrise in Agra

You can choose between a private transfer and express train for the journey south to Agra, the first imperial capital of the Islamic Mughal Empire. Pay a dawn visit to the Yamuna River to see the marble mausoleum of the Taj Mahal and the red sandstone Agra Fort, while intrepid wildlife enthusiasts can incorporate a detour to Rajasthan’s tiger-packed Ranthambore National Park.
‘Most people spend a night in Agra, but I’d recommend staying an extra night so that you can relax at The Oberoi Amarvilas, the only hotel with a front-on view of the Taj Mahal – as well as a wonderful pool and spa, two excellent restaurants, and a lovely bar overlooking the Taj,’ says Livsey.
Colours of Rajasthan

The route now turns west to India’s largest state (outweighing the UK by area and population), a fabled desert kingdom of ochre dunes and russet ruins with pops of ultramarine and saffron in the craft markets.
We’ll ensure you experience the legendary sights of the Pink City, state capital Jaipur, where the Hawa Mahal’s pyramidal hive of 953 latticed windows is an aesthetic landmark of the Rajput maharajas’ City Palace. Also nearby are the terraces and ramparts of the mountaintop Amber Fort, where you can attend a blessing ceremony at a shrine to Hindu goddess Durga, and the macaques and langurs that give Galta Ji (the Monkey Temple) its name.

Susan Livsey enjoyed the 18thcentury Jantar Mantar astronomical observatory, home to the world’s largest stone sundial, and The Leela Palace hotel’s Mohan Mahal restaurant, its glittering interior inspired by the Amber Fort’s ornate Sheesh Mahal pavilion. ‘I recommend an off-the-beaten-track walking tour with our guide Fatima, as it’s fascinating to hear about India from a female perspective as you visit teahouses and craft studios,’ she says.
Further Rajasthani explorations can take in the romantic lakeside palaces of Udaipur, and Jodhpur’s imposing Mehrangarh fort and pastel-blue old quarter. Susan Livsey recommends The Oberoi Udaivilas on Lake Pichola in Udaipur; when you stay at more than one Oberoi hotel, the team passes on your details and preferences, so you don’t have to check-in again. With first-hand knowledge like that, we’ll make sure your Indian experience is smoother than the Taj Mahal’s soaring domes at sunrise.
